·         Considerable bulk of information on taxation for 10 divisions of forestry in Zhytomyr region contaminated after Chornobyl catastrophe is contained in electronic registry for radiological and taxation data for forests growing in a zone of Absolute resettlement. Electronic registry is represented by the database for divisions of forestry, and contains quarterly description of forests to the point of each plot; that permits to reflect the actual radiological state, contamination of forest stand, density of soil contamination. Utilization of Application package (DB+Geo-information) allows defining forest quarters with permissible levels of wood contamination in respect to Hygienic norms for specific activity of radionuclides 137Cs and 90Sr in wood and wood production (HNSAR-2005). Excerpts of DB permit to select the most acceptable plots from the point of forest utilization view, levels of radioactive contamination, resources and state of wood et al.; likewise, elaborate a long-term strategy for forest employment in zones of radioactive contamination; estimate economic efficiency for wood usage.Geo information is attached, and represented by maps for prediction of radioactive contamination of areas and wood in dynamics, soil maps, and maps of information for taxation.Total information can be used for informative support of decisions making as for economic use of forest lands in radioactively contaminated territories in Zhytomyr region of Ukraine.

·         After Chornobyl catastrophe more then 100 thousands ha of forests in Ukraine have been allocated to the 2-nd zone (zone of Absolute resettlement). These areas are needed, and have to be rehabilitated. Thus, importance and necessity of elaboration and realizing of bio-power engineering (green energy) projects in “The Concept for realizing the state policy directed to activity development in the radioactive contaminated zones revealed after Chornobyl Catastrophe”(prescription CM of Ukraine, July, 18,2012, ¹ 535-ð) were underlined: as well as use of alternative and renewable sources of energy; realizing of ecological and nature conservation projects; conducting of forest renewable   measures.

·         Electronic registry is intended to work out these  problems, as well to use its possibilities in the organizations dealt with substantiation of lands  restoration for economic use, and as well,  to carry out radiological expertise and support decisions making for the lands remove from the category of radioactive contaminated ones, especially for resources of bio-energy  production.

·         Results of implementation

introduction of results into research-and-educational process at the department of “Radiobiology and radioecology” of National University of life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine (NULESU); in the natural reserve “Drevljanskij”; at International Radioecological Laboratory (IRL) of State Scientific and Research Institution “Chornobyl Center for Nuclear Safety, Radioactive Waste and Radioecology

methodical guidance as for countermeasures application at the current stage of  Chornobyl radiation catastrophe consequences elimination has been implemented into research-and-productive practice at Scientific research Institute (SRI) for regional problems of ecology  associated with Zhytomyr National agroecological University, Research station, Sarny (Rivne region), Research-and-educational  process at the department of radiobiology and radioecology NULESU

Bulletin of the radiation situation in the critical settlements at the territories of Ukraine contaminated with radionuclides

Bulletin of the radiation situation in the critical settlements at the territories of Ukraine contaminated with radionuclides was prepared within the frameworks of the program Radiological monitoring of agricultural production and areas in the critical settlements of Ukraine”. The Bulletin summarizes the materials obtained in the monitoring survey of 2004-2009 in the most critical settlements. In each settlements all pastures were identified which were used for grazing cattle from the private subsidiary plots. The pasture-oriented sampling of milk was performed. Thus, the radiological passports of the pastures for each settlement were created. Such an approach in the future will enable the accurate realization of the countermeasures and targeted governmental funding aimed to improve the radiological situation in the most critical areas.

Adaptation of the single cell gel electrophoresis for quantification of the cytogenetic effects of radiation to plants

UIAR NUBiP adapted the single cell gel electrophoresis (Comet Assay) for quantification of the cytogenetic effects of irradiation in the apical meristem tissues of plants (Scots pine). The method is based on isolation of the cell nuclei and their further encapsulation in the agarose layer at the microscope slide. Image analysis was performed using the special software designed for determination of the chromatin quantities in the nuclei and “comet” tails. Thus, for each sample (and, respectively, for each dose rate range) it is possible to identify the numeric value of the cytogenetic effect related to the DNA breaks.

It was shown that the results obtained by means of Comet assay correlated well with the results obtained in direct visual detection of the chromosome aberrations in cells. For apical meristem tissues of Scots pine the dependency “dose rate – cytogenetic effect” was formulated. The possible mechanism of chronic irradiation impact was proposed which related the effects at the cell and morphological levels.
